How to Make Scented Salt Dough for Christmas Ornaments- a family-friendly, holiday craft that the kids will love!
I love making Christmas crafts and it’s even more fun now that my 5-year-old joins me! Salt dough is easy and inexpensive to make and the ornaments can be used on the Christmas tree or as gift tags.
Last year, we made handprint ornaments with the dough. This year we decided to cut out shapes and paint them.
The addition of essential oil (we used Peppermint) made the ornaments smell fantastic!

How to Make Scented Salt Dough
Materials
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 10-12 drops of essential oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, stir together the ingredients. Knead together with your hand until the consistency is smooth and pliable.
- Divide the dough into 3 sections (it's easier to roll out in smaller sections) and roll out until it is approximately 1/8 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters and poke a hole at the top using a straw.
- Bake for 60 minutes. Let cool thoroughly. Add a string for hanging and paint them if you please.
Ingredients needed for the dough:
4 cups all-purpose flour (no for the premium stuff- inexpensive flour will work just fine)
1 cup salt
1 3/4 cups water
10-12 drops of essential oil
Mix together the flour, salt, water, and essential oil in a large bowl. Stir together and then use your hands to knead the dough until it is soft and pliable.
The next step is to roll the dough out (I found it easier to do this in sections). You can pat it down with your hand or use a rolling pin. Flatten it until it is approximately 1/8 inches thick. Cut out your shapes.
Pierce holes in the dough using straw. Place cut outs on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes.
After ornaments have dried, you can leave as-is or decorate with acrylic paint.
If you’d like to give them a shiny finish, you can brush on Modge Podge.
Once the ornaments have dried, thread string through and make a knot. If the holes are too small, you can make the larger using a drill fitted with a pilot drill bit.
