Zig Zag Stitch Hat Knitting Pattern- fast, fun and beginner-friendly!

If you’re a beginner knitter, you might look at this Zig Zag Stitch Hat Knitting Pattern and think “Pass, it looks too complicated.” It’s not! The zig zag pattern is created using a basic combination of knit and purl stitches. If you’re new to knitting, there are a few terms that you may not be familiar with (YO and SSK). I explained them below.

Terms you’ll need to know for this pattern:

YO- yarn over. This means to To make a yarn over, you simply bring the knitting yarn (the “over” strand) over the needle between two existing stitches on one row, and then work that strand as a stitch when you work your way back to it in the next row.

SSK- slip, slip, knit. This is used as a decrease. Work to the place where the decrease is to be made. Slip the next 2 stitches, one at a time as if to knit, to the right needle. Insert the left needle into the fronts of these two stitches and knit them together. One stitch is decreased. This decrease slants to the left.

Zig Zag Stitch Hat Knitting Pattern

Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-East Thick & Quick in Clay (I used the “Bonus Bundle” for this pattern because it’s what I had on hand. The regular-sized Wool-Ease Thick & Quick skein will be enough)

Needles: Size US 13 circular, 16 inch

Cast on 42 sts. Join together and place a marker.

Work 3 rows in K1, P1 ribbing.

Start knitting the Zig Zag Stitch:

Round 1: *K3, K2tog, Yo, K1; rep from * to end.
Round 2: *K2, K2tog, Yo, K2; rep from * to end.
Round 3: *K1, K2tog, Yo, K3; rep from * to end.
Round 4: *K2tog, Yo, K4; rep from * to end.
Round 5: *K1, Yo, SSK, K3; rep from * to end.
Round 6: *K2, Yo, SSK, K2; rep from * to end.
Round 7: *K3, Yo, SSK, K1; rep from * to end.
Round 8: *K4, Yo, SSK; rep from * to end.

Rep Rounds 1- 8 for pattern.

Work until you have completed the pattern two times (16 rounds in pattern).

Work the pattern a third time from rounds 1-7.

Shape crown:

On Round 8 (Decrease round 1), knit: *K4, SSK; rep from * to end (35 sts).

Decrease round 2: *Knit 3, knit 2 together; rep from * to end (28 sts)

Decrease round 3: Knit 2, knit 2 together; rep from * to end (21 sts)

Decrease round 4: Knit 1, knit 2 together; rep from * to end (14 sts)

Decrease round 5: Knit 2 together; rep from * to end (7 sts)

Break yarn, pull through remaining stitches. Pull to tighten. Weave in ends. Make and attach pom pom.
