Easy Colorblock Hat Knitting Pattern- cute, comfortable and topped with a big pom pom!

I wanted some basic-with-a-twist fall hats for the boys so I created this Easy Colorblock Hat Knitting Pattern. These hats are lightweight but still warm enough for this transitional weather. The rich colors work well with the boy’s fall clothes.

I used Lion Brand Jeans for this pattern. It’s a great new yarn that mimics the look and colors of jeans. Each color has a tweeded effect which adds interest to anything you knit. The yarn is medium weight and very soft- perfect for accessories and clothing!

This hat features a ribbed design with a color change near the crown. It’s knit on circular needles with double point needles for the crown shaping. It’s a basic design that’s beginner-friendly as long as you can use circular and double point needles. The sizes are 1-2 years and 3-4 years. The ribbing makes it very stretchy so this hat could work on other sizes as well.

The finishing touch is a big, fluffy pom pom. I always use a pom pom maker. I bought one years ago and I never made another pom pom without it! Easy Colorblock Hat Knitting Pattern

Yarn: For the brown hat: Lion Brand Jeans in Topstitch and in Khaki. For the blue hat: Lion Brand Jeans in Stonewash and in Capri

Needles: Size US 7 circular knitting needles, 16 inch, Size US 7 double point knitting needles

Guage: 2 inches = 8 sts in stockinette stitch

Sizes: 1-2 years, 3-4 years (in parenthesis)

With either the brown or blue hat (depending on which hat you’re making) cast on 80 (86) stitches with the circular needles. Join ends together and place a marker.

Work in K2, P2 ribbing until piece measures 5 (5 1/2) inches from the cast on edge. Break yarn.

With the second color, work in K2, P2 ribbing until piece measures 8 (8 1/2) inches from the cast on edge. End with a wrong side row.

Shape crown:

Switch to double point needles when necessary.

Round 1 (right side): Knit 2 together, Purl 2 across round 60 (63 sts)

Round 2: Knit 1, Purl 2 together across round. 40 (43 sts)

Round 3: K1, P1 across round.

Round 4: Knit 2 together across round. (for the larger size- knit the last st) 20 (22 sts)

Round 5: Knit across

Round 6: Knit 2 together across round.

Break yarn, pull through remaining sts. Pull to tighten. Weave in ends.

Make and attach pom pom in main color.
