Flat Knit Baby Bonnet- fast & easy pattern that is ideal for knitting beginners! Knit on straight needles!
Is there anything cuter than a baby in a bonnet? I love the retro shape mixed with modern colors and fibers. This bonnet is knit flat on single point needles which makes it perfect for beginners. It’s knit in garter stitch with some basic decreases.
I used Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca yarn for this baby hat. It comes in an array of pretty natural colors and jewel tones.
The finished bonnet makes a great gender-neutral gift!

Flat Knit Baby Bonnet
Yarn: Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca (yarn weight #4, worsted weight yarn)
Needles: US 6 single point
Gauge: 2 inches= 8 sts
Size 6 months
Cast on 80 sts.
1st Row: Cast off 26 sts to make the front tie. Knit to the end of the row (54 sts)
2nd Row: Cast on 26 sts. Then, cast of these 26 sts. This creates the other front tie. Knit across the remaining 54 sts.
Knit every row until pieces measure 5 1/2 inches from the cast on edge.
Decrease:
Place marker
Row 1: Knit 7, Knit 2 together across row. (48 sts)
Row 2: Knit across
Row 3: Knit 6, Knit 2 together across row. (42 sts)
Row: 4: Knit across
Row 5: Knit 5, Knit 2 together across row. (36 sts)
Row 6: Knit across
Row 7: Knit 4, Knit 2 together across row. (30 sts)
Row 8: Knit across.
Row 9: Knit 3, Knit 2 together across row. (24 sts)
Row 10: Knit across.
Row 11: Knit 2, Knit 2 together across row. (18 sts)
Row 12: Knit across.
Row 13: Knit 2 together across row. (9 sts)
Break yarn, pull through stitches to tighten. Sew to marker.
