I had originally planned on buying a long length of heavy duty rope and using it to hang the DIY swing. At the last minute, I found a rope on Amazon intended for just this purpose. I purchased it instead and it turned out to be great! This Porch swing rope is easily adjustable and so easy to hang.
Why Build a Porch Swing Stand?
Many homes don’t have the structural support needed to safely hang a porch swing from the ceiling. A porch swing stand allows you to place your swing anywhere you like without needing an overhead beam.
Some of the benefits of building a swing stand include:
• you can place your swing anywhere in your yard
• no need to modify your home’s structure
• portable and flexible placement
• perfect for patios, decks, or gardens
A freestanding swing stand also allows you to move your swing around as your outdoor space evolves.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Porch Swing
Before you build your stand, it’s important to think about where you want your porch swing to live.
A few ideal locations include:
• a shaded corner of your yard
• a quiet garden area
• a patio or deck
• under a tree
• near a fire pit or seating area
Many homeowners love placing porch swings in areas that feel calm and relaxing.

How to Build a Porch Swing Stand
Measure the length of your swing bench. I spaced my posts 5 feet apart (measured from the inside of the posts). You want to make sure there’s approximately 6 inches of clearance on either side of the swing. Dig 2 feet down for the post holes. Make Use a level to ensure that posts are plumb and level. Sink the posts and add concrete and water to the hole.

Set the last 4 x 4 post on top of the 2 others. It’s ok if there’s a little overhang on the sides. The 1 x 6 will cover it.

Drill pilot holes and use the L brackets to attach the top post to the sides.
Note- I hung the swing before attaching the 1 x 6 boards to the front and back of the post so I would have more room to work.

Use the bottom of a flower pot or a bowl to trace a semi-circle angle at the end of the 1 x 6. Cut out with a jig saw. Use sandpaper to smooth the edge.
Use the cut out piece as a template for the other sides.

Line up the 1 x 6 with the top of the post. Screw in place.

Screw the other 1 x 6 to the other side of the post.
Hanging the Swing:

The swing hangers kit includes everything you’ll need. Screw the hanging latch to the bottom of the post on both sides. Make the width the same as your swing. Make sure they are centered on the post.

Attach the screw eye to the back and the bottom sides of the swing. Attach to carabiner to connect the rope.

Attach the rope to the side and back on both sides. I hung my swing 34 inches from the top beam (measured from the beam to the top of the swing). The porch swing ropes are easily adjustable. Tweak the length until it’s level and at a comfortable height.
Style your porch swing set with pillows and cushions and enjoy!

Porch Swing Stand FAQ
Can you hang a porch swing without a porch?
Yes! If you don’t have a covered porch, you can still enjoy a swing by building a freestanding porch swing stand. A sturdy wooden swing stand allows you to place a swing anywhere in your yard, garden, patio, or deck.

How much weight can a porch swing stand hold?
A properly built porch swing stand made with strong lumber and heavy-duty hardware can typically support 400–600 pounds. The exact weight capacity depends on the type of wood, hardware, and construction used.
For safety, always:
• use structural lumber
• install heavy-duty bolts and eye hooks
• check hardware regularly
What is the best wood for building a porch swing stand?
The best wood for building a porch swing stand is pressure-treated lumber or cedar.
Pressure-treated lumber is commonly used because it:
• resists moisture
• holds up well outdoors
• is widely available and affordable
Cedar is another great option because it is naturally resistant to weather and insects.
How high should a porch swing hang from the ground?
Most porch swings should hang 17–19 inches from the ground for comfortable seating. This height allows people to sit easily while still allowing the swing to move freely.
You can adjust the height by changing the length of the chains or ropes used to hang the swing.
How far should a porch swing be from the wall or frame?
A porch swing should typically have at least 14–16 inches of clearance behind it so it can swing freely without hitting the frame or nearby structures.
If you’re building a freestanding swing stand, make sure the frame is wide enough to allow safe movement.
Can you build a porch swing stand as a beginner DIY project?
Yes! A porch swing stand is actually a great beginner woodworking project. The design is fairly simple and requires only basic tools and materials.
Many DIY enthusiasts complete this project over a weekend and enjoy having a relaxing outdoor feature they built themselves.
