How to Build a Porch Swing Stand & How to Hang a Porch Swing
How to Build a Porch Swing Stand & How to Hang a Porch Swing- an afternoon project you’ll enjoy all summer!
Last time I showed you how to build this DIY Porch Swing (it’s easier than you think!). Today, I’m going to show you how to build a stand and how to hang it. I wanted my porch swing in the backyard at the edge of my property, so it would overlook the lawn. I constructed a basic stand that’s simple, inexpensive and easily holds the weight. This beginner woodworking project can be completed in an afternoon.
I had originally planned on buying a long length of heavy duty rope and using it to hang the DIY swing. At the last minute, I found a rope on Amazon intended for just this purpose. I purchased it instead and it turned out to be great! This Porch swing rope is easily adjustable and so easy to hang.

How to Build a Porch Swing Stand
Measure the length of your swing bench. I spaced my posts 5 feet apart (measured from the inside of the posts). You want to make sure there’s approximately 6 inches of clearance on either side of the swing. Dig 2 feet down for the post holes. Make Use a level to ensure that posts are plumb and level. Sink the posts and add concrete and water to the hole.
Set the last 4 x 4 post on top of the 2 others. It’s ok if there’s a little overhang on the sides. The 1 x 6 will cover it.
Drill pilot holes and use the L brackets to attach the top post to the sides.
Note- I hung the swing before attaching the 1 x 6 boards to the front and back of the post so I would have more room to work.
Use the bottom of a flower pot or a bowl to trace a semi-circle angle at the end of the 1 x 6. Cut out with a jig saw. Use sandpaper to smooth the edge.
Use the cut out piece as a template for the other sides.
Line up the 1 x 6 with the top of the post. Screw in place.
Screw the other 1 x 6 to the other side of the post.
Hanging the Swing:
The swing hangers kit includes everything you’ll need. Screw the hanging latch to the bottom of the post on both sides. Make the width the same as your swing. Make sure they are centered on the post.
Attach the screw eye to the back and the bottom sides of the swing. Attach to carabiner to connect the rope.
Attach the rope to the side and back on both sides. I hung my swing 34 inches from the top beam (measured from the beam to the top of the swing). The porch swing ropes are easily adjustable. Tweak the length until it’s level and at a comfortable height.
Style your porch swing set with pillows and cushions and enjoy!
