How to Build a Cornhole Board

Last week we went to Sunset Friday at Wölffer (and checked another activity off our summer bucket list-yay!) The vineyard had a bunch of cornhole boards and they kept Indigo busy for hours! After seeing how much he enjoyed them. I figured a cornhole board would be a fun addition to the backyard. Full disclosure- I wanted to play too!

These boards are relatively easy to build and they can be customized any way you’d like. I went with a ombré design that was inspired by the beach.

We’ve been getting a lot of use out of these boards since I build them. Tossing the beanbags around after dinner feels like the perfect way to end a summer evening!

Supplies needed:

1/2 plywood sheet

2 x 4 x 8

3 inch exterior screws

Compass

Jigsaw

Exterior paint or stain

Beanbags

Cut the wood into the following pieces (makes 1 board):

24″ x 48″ plywood sheet

2 x 4 – 2 @ 4 feet each

2 x 4- 2 @ 22 inches each

2 x 4- 2 @ 12 inches each (cut the ends on an angle)

Place the 2 x 4s on their side and lay the plywood sheet on top. Screw down. Countersink the screws so they are easier to fill later.

This is what the board should look like once the sides are screwed in place.

Screw the 22 inch boards to the top and the bottom.

Screw the legs into the top corners on both sides. Measure 12 inches across and 9 inches down from the top- mark this point with a pencil. Using this point as the center, use a compass to draw a circle with a 6 inch diameter. Use a jigsaw to cut out the circle. Sand lightly and fill the screw holes.

I primed the board using an exterior primer then painted it in a ombré design. (Home improvement stores will mix samples of exterior paint for around $3) Once dry, I sealed it.
