Anyone with a cat knows that they love warm, cozy spaces, so this knit cat bed is perfect! Best of all, it’s easy and fast to knit. This cat bed is knit on straight needles so it’s beginner-friendly. The bed is knit flat, then sewn at the side seam. The bottom is gathered and pulled tight to close.
Needles Size 15 straight
Yarn: Red Heart Grande in Foggy (3 skeins)
Pattern instructions:
Cast on 40 sts.
Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1 across row.
Row 2: Purl 1, Knit 1 across row
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 14 1/2 inches from the cast on edge. Bind off in ribbing.
How to finish:

Fold over and sew seam. Weave in ends.

Thread and yarn needle and weave in and out to gather the fabric

Pull the yarn to tighten, cinching the bottom completely closed.

This is what the piece should look like with the end cinched.

Fold the edge over (almost to the bottom). This doubled up the sides and helps the bed keep its shape. Weave in ends.
Choosing the Right Yarn for a Cat Bed
Yarn choice plays a big role in how your finished cat bed looks and feels. Since this project is meant to be soft and durable, it’s best to use a thicker yarn like bulky or super bulky weight.
These yarns knit up quickly and create a plush, cushioned texture that cats love. You can also hold multiple strands of yarn together to create a thicker fabric.
Durability is important, so consider yarns that are easy to clean and can withstand regular use. Acrylic blends are often a good choice because they’re soft, affordable, and machine washable.

How This Cat Bed Comes Together
The construction of this easy cat bed knitting pattern is simple and approachable. The bed is typically knit as a flat or circular piece and then shaped into a cozy structure.
Depending on the design, you may create a base and sides that form a soft, supportive bowl shape. This gives your cat a comfortable space to curl up and feel secure.
Because the pattern uses basic stitches, it’s easy to get into a rhythm. Once you start, it becomes a relaxing, repetitive project that’s perfect for knitting while watching TV or unwinding at the end of the day.
Make It Your Own
One of the best parts of this project is how customizable it is. You can easily adjust the size to fit your cat or even make a larger version for a small dog.
You can also experiment with different yarn textures and colors to match your home decor. Neutral tones create a modern, minimal look, while brighter colors can add a fun pop to your space.

Tips for Making a Cat Bed Your Pet Will Actually Use
Once your cat bed is finished, you’ll want to make sure your cat actually uses it—and a few small details can make a big difference. Cats can be surprisingly picky about where they sleep, so placement and familiarity are key.
Try placing the bed in a spot your cat already loves, such as near a sunny window, on a favorite chair, or in a quiet corner of your home. Cats are naturally drawn to warm, cozy spaces, so positioning the bed in a comfortable, low-traffic area will make it more appealing.
You can also encourage your cat to use the bed by adding a familiar scent. Placing a blanket they already sleep on or gently rubbing the bed with something that smells like you can help make the space feel safe and inviting.
If you have multiple cats, consider making more than one bed to avoid competition and give each pet their own cozy space.
