Sephora Play July Review- Hits & Misses

July 15, 2017

Sephora Play July Review- Hits & Misses     One of my favorite things about ordering from Sephora is the samples. When I found out about “Play” I knew I had to sign up! If you’re unfamiliar with Sephora “Play”, it’s subscription service that sends you 5 deluxe samples plus a fragrance sample each month for $10. You also get 50 bonus Beauty Insider points for the month, which (unfortunately) can only be redeemed in store.
After I signed up for Play I searched around to find some reviews of the past products. To my surprise, I didn’t find many. I thought it would be a fun (and hopefully) helpful new feature to review the box on the blog each month.

Sephora Play July Review Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara
I’ve purchased many Bobbi Brown products over the years (mostly foundations and concealers) but I’ve never tried her mascara. As soon as I opened the tube I noticed that the brush was huge. The lifts your lashes and makes them look super full, dark and long. The downside? Clumping. Once I combed through my lashes really did look voluminous. I’m currently using Benefit’s They’re Real! mascara, but I’m going to make the switch to Bobbi Brown after it runs out. The extra step of combing through is worth it when you see how great your lashes look!

Sephora Play July Review Fresh Rose Face Mask

Face masks are one of my favorite way to pamper myself so I was psyched to find one in the Play box. This one contains real rose petals, rosewater and a “smart” algae that delivers moisture. According to Sephora’s website, this mask is intended to be a solution for dryness, redness and pores. The consistency was thin and more watery than any other gel mask I’ve tried. This Rose Face Mask felt nice on and after washing it off and the smell was pleasant. Afterwards, the pores on my nose looked smaller but I didn’t see any difference in redness and my skin didn’t feel that hydrated. For a similar price I found the Alchimie Forever Kantic Brightening Moisture Mask to provide much better results. I’ll definitely use the rest of the sample, but I won’t buy the full size version of this.
Sephora Play July Review Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray
The coconut and rose combine for a fresh scent that screams summer. I used it before blow drying (starting at the top of my ears down) and it made my hair feel really soft and it reduced frizz. I’ve avoided leave in conditioners in the past because they made my hair feel heavy and greasy, but this one did just the opposite. Also, a little goes a long way, so the $20 price for the full size isn’t too bad.
Sephora Play July Review Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Color Splash Lipstick in Set Sail
I’m a total packaging lover so I was pleased to see this beautiful blue marbled tube. Since the tube was so summery and beach-y I expected either a light or bright lipstick. I was disappointed to find a very dark- almost mauve nude. It didn’t look great with my fair coloring but I could see this shade being pretty on someone with darker skin.
The formula, however, was very good. This is a matte lipstick that goes on smooth and doesn’t dry your lips out. Since the lipstick is so hydrating it makes your lips look fuller. This is a product I’d like to try in a more flattering-for-me shade (I’m thinking Sunkissed– a pink peach).
Sephora Play July Caudalie Vine [Activ] Glow Activating Anti-Wrinkle Serum
This serum had a different consistency than I’m used to. Instead of being a gel, it has a thin, milky texture, similar to a lotion. It absorbed nicely into the skin and I noticed that the pores on my nose looked smaller. The smell is pleasant and it leaves your skin with an overall glow. This serum works well great under makeup because it doesn’t leave behind any stickiness.
Sephora Pllay July Review Clean Reserve Sueded Oud Perfume
Despite my love of beauty and skincare products, I’m not big on perfume. I find many of the scents off putting. When I find a fragrance I actually like I wear it exclusively for years (currently Philosophy Falling in Love) I always get a fragrance sample with my Sephora order and so far I haven’t liked any of them. Needless to say, I’m super picky when it comes to fragrances.
So, I’ll admit- I had no idea what “Oud” was. Turns out it’s one of the most popular scents on the market today. Oud is said to be the most expensive wood in the world and perfume made from it is sweet and woody (thanks, Google!) This scent surprised me! It’s fresh but at the same time really sexy. Some of the reviews said that the scent didn’t last long if you sprayed it on your skin. I sprayed it on my clothes and it lasted all day. Truth be told- I couldn’t stop smelling myself! This scent is perfect for the Fall- I already have the travel spray in my Sephora basket.
