When I was 7 years old I crocheted a scarf for Mother’s Day. It ended up being a totally crooked shape (due to mis-counted rows), but my mom still wore it proudly. Thankfully my DIY skills have improved since then, but one thing remains- I still think handmade gifts are the best! Since no gift is complete without the perfect card, I teamed up with American Greetings to help “Make Her Day” this Sunday, May 14th with this Decoupage Flower Pot DIY.
My mom is an avid gardener so my Mother’s Day gifts are usually plant related. I got all the craft supplies for this DIY, the plants and the beautiful American Greetings cards, tissue paper and gift bags at Walmart. One-stop shopping is a real blessing when you have a toddler in tow!
Since becoming a mother I make sure to include a gift from my son to his grandma. Mother’s Day is about celebrating all the special women in our lives! For this year’s present I decided to make DIY Decoupage Flower Pots. This is an easy and kid-friendly project that can be customized any way you’d like. Let’s get crafting!
Supplies needed for Decoupage Flower Pot DIY:
Terracotta flower pot
White spray paint
Mod Podge & paintbrush
Tissue paper in a variety of colors
Spray paint the pots white. This will really make the colored tissue paper pop!
Cut the tissue paper in small triangles
When you decoupage it’s best to work in small sections. Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge on the pot.
Press a tissue paper triangle down with your fingers and brush another thin layer of Mod Podge over it.
You can create any design you’d like. I decided to make an Aztec-ish print. The tissue paper can be overlapped to create additional colors and dimension.
Work in small sections until the design goes around the whole pot.
Once the Mod Podge has dried, cover the entire pot in another layer. [Note- To keep your flower pot looking great, it’s best to put it indoors or on a covered porch. If it’s left directly outdoors, the Mod Podge will wear away after time]
No handmade present is complete without a thoughtful card and beautiful packaging! American Greetings has Mother’s Day cards not only for moms but also for the aunts, grandmas and other special ladies in your life. I love how the gift bags and cards match the flower pots! I made a second, smaller flower pot for Indigo to give to Grandma. The plants are Hyacinthus that I picked up at Walmart. They smell amazing!!!
Ibotta is having a special offer on American Greetings – buy 2 cards and earn $2.00
Next time you’re in Walmart, be sure to swing by the greeting card section for the perfect American Greetings Mother’s Day card. Don’t forget the tissue paper and gift bags!
