Trifecta Ear Flap Hat [knitting pattern]

January 7, 2015

Chunky knit hats have become my go-to accessories ever since the temperatures dropped. This hat is a take on one of my older patterns. I decided to give it a new look by lengthening the ear flaps and adding pom poms. Hope you like it!
Yarn- Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in Spearmint (2 skeins)
Size US 13 needles
For the hat:
Cast on 48 stitches
Rows 1-26: Work 26 rows in k2, p2 Rib.
Row 27 (Dec Row): *K2, p2, k2, p2tog; rep from * across row  Row 28: *K1, p2, k2, p2; rep from * across row.
Row 29 (Dec Row): *k2, p2tog, k2, p1; rep from * across row Row 30: *K1, p2; rep from * across row.
Row 31: *K1, k2tog; rep from * across row Cut yarn, leaving an 8 in. tail. Thread tail through stitches of last row and pull to secure. Use the tail to sew the side seam together.
For the ear flaps (make 2):
Cast on 12 stitches. Work in K2, P2 ribbing until piece measures 9 inches. Bind off 1 stitch every row until 2 remain. Bind off.
Finishing: Cuff the hat. Using a yarn needle, sew the flaps on to the hat. Make 3 pom poms and attach them to the top of the hat and the ear flaps.

I made your earlier version for my daughter and grand-daughter. They love them. I really like this updated version. I guess I'll have to make them new hats. Thank you for your patterns.
