Textured Cardigan Knitting Pattern

I can’t get enough of cozy cardigans! They’re perfect for layering over dresses and jeans. This Textured Cardigan Knitting Pattern is knit on straight needles using a simple pattern of garter and stockinette stitches.

Pattern
Sizes Small (36 inch bust), Medium, Large
Needles size 10 1/2 US
Yarn- Loops & Threads Charisma in Deep Woods (8- 3.5 oz balls)
Pattern stitch– Knit 13 rows in Garter Stitch, P1, K1 (Stockinette Stitch) for 11 rows. Repeat these 24 rows for pattern

Back: Cast on 60 (62-64) sts. Work in pattern for 14 rows. Dec Row 1– K 10, K 2 tog, work to last 12 sts. K 2 tog, K 10. Work even until 1st row of next Garter Stitch stripe is completed. Next Dec Row– Repeat Dec Row 1. Work even until first row of next Stockinette Stitch stripe is completed. Dec Row 3– K 9, K 2 tog, work to last 11 sts, K 2 tog, K 9. Work even until first row of next Garter Stitch stripe is completed. Next Dec Row– Repeat Dec Row 3. Continue in this manner to decrease 1 stitch each edge of 2nd row of Stockinette Stitch and Garter Stitch stripe, always having 1 stitch less before decrease on next  decrease rows until 48 (50-52) sts remain. Work even until 22 inches from beginning or desired length to underarm.

Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 stitch at each edge every other row 2 times- 38 (40-42) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7 1/2 (8, 8 1/2) inches.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off 4 sts. at the beginning of next 4 rows, 4 (4, 5) sts at the beginning of next  rows 14 (16-16) sts. Bind off for back of neck.

Left Front: Cast on 36 (38-40) sts. Work in pattern as for back, Keeping 6 stitches in Garter Stitch at front edge for front border. Shape at side edge only as for back- 30 (32-34) sts. Work to underarm as for back.

Shape Armhole: At arm edge, bind off 3 stitches once, Dec 1 stitch every other row 2 times- 25 (27-29) sts. Work even until armhole measures 5 1/4 (5 3/4, 6 1/4) inches, ending at front edge.

Shape Neck: At front edge bind off 9 (10-11) sts, complete row. Dec 1 stitch at neck edge every other row 4 (5-5) times.- 12 (12-13) sts. Work even to shoulder as back.

Shape Shoulders: At arm edge, bind off 4 stitches every other row 2 times 4 (4-5) sts once.

Right Front: Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing all shaping

Sleeves: Cast on 50 (52-54) sts. Work in pattern decreasing 1 stitch each edge as on back on second row of first Stockinette Stitch stripe, then Garter Stitch stripe as on back, starting K 10, K 2 tog, work to last 12 stitches, K 2 tog, K 10. On 2nd decrease, work K 9, K 2 tog, work to last 11 sts, K  tog, K 9. Continue in this manner until 42 (44-46) sts remain. Work even until 14 inches from the beginning. End same pattern row as at underarm of back. 

Shape Cap: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch each edge every other row 10 (11-12) times- 16 sts. Bind off 2 sts beginning of 4 rows. Bind off remaining 8 sts.

Finishing: Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.

Belt: Cast on 8 sts. Work in Garter stitch until pieces measures 60 inches. Bind off.

  2. Interesting pattern; with enough extra balls of yarn and reverse the shaping, I may be able to make a man-sized item for walking my dog in the cold winter weather. Thanks for posting the pattern!
