diy faux agate ornaments

November 6, 2013

I love the look of agate slices, but they can be kind of pricey, especially if you need a large quantity for decorations. This DIY tutorial will show you how to make agate using Polymer Clay. I plan on adding a bunch of these to our Christmas tree this year!

  • Polymer Clay in several different colors
  • Rolling Pin (if you are using a pin that you normally use for food- place a piece of wax paper over the clay. Polymer clay is non-toxic but it is not food grade)
  • Sharp knife (one that is not also used for food)
  • Toothpick
  • String

[Take a few different colors of clay and roll them into balls roughly the size of a marble. Combine the balls and roll them into a log]
[Using the rolling pin, roll out some sections of clay. Then roll the log up in the clay]
[Roll some sheets of clay around the log- the more sheets you roll the larger your agate slice will be. Using your hand, flatten the roll out a bit- agate slices are oval- not circular. Then, cut into sections that are roughly 1/4 inch thick. Poke a hole in the top using a toothpick and bake according to the instructions on the clay package. Let cool and then thread the string through the hole]
