diy gathered high waist skirt

April 1, 2013

I love full skirts. They’re flattering, feminine and, best of all, comfortable! This sewing tutorial shows you how to make a high waist, full skirt without a pattern. The fabric is simply gathered and attached to a waistband.

  • 1 yard of Rayon or lightweight Cotton fabric (44″ wide)
  • 1/8 yard of contrasting fabric (for the waistband)
  • 3/4″ yard lining fabric
  • 9″ invisible zipper
[Cut the fabric in half horizontally, creating 2 sections that are 18″ long. Take one of the sections and cut it in half vertically creating 2 pieces that are 22″ wide and 18″ long. Take the shorter sections (these will be the back of the skirt) and sew them to the long piece (the front) at the sides. Repeat with the lining fabric]
[For the waistband, cut a piece of fabric that is 27″ long and 4″ wide. This will make an XS skirt. To size up, measure your waist and add 2 inches]
[Stitch a loose line across the top of the skirt for gathering]
[Pull on the end of the thread to gather the fabric. Gather it until it is the same length as the waistband]
[Sew the skirt on to the waistband]
[Sew the lining on to the waistband]
[Using an iron, press down the top of the waistband]
[Fold the waistband over and stitch in place]
[Hem the lining]
[Sew the zipper on to the skirt]
[Lastly, hem the skirt]
