diy braided jersey necklace with suede detail

December 13, 2012

A few months ago I did a DIY tutorial for a braided jersey necklace. In my never ending quest to make use of my fabric scarps I came up with another version.

  • Jersey fabric (you can also use old t shirts)
  •  Suede

[Cut 6 lengths of jersey fabric. 3 should measure 40″ long and 2″ wide. The other 3 should measure 36″ long and 2″ wide.  Fold each strip in half width wise, right sides together,  and sew a line down the side creating a tube]
[Take the 3 longer strands and turn the them right side out]
[Sew a line across the top to connect the 3 strands]

[Braid and then sew another line across the bottom to prevent unraveling]
[Repeat the steps with the 3 shorter strands. Once you are finished, sew the 2 braids together at the ends]

[Then, join the ends of the braids together by sewing a vertical line]
[The part where the ends join together is covered with a suede band. Cut a piece of suede that’s 1 1/4″ wide and 4 inches long. Sew the end to the necklace]
[Pull tight, and fold the end of the suede over. Sew in place]
[The other 2 suede bands are purely decorative and do not cover anything up. I spaced them 2 1/4″ apart]
