diy double-layered tulle skirt (inspired by sandro)

September 24, 2012

This skirt can easily be made using cotton jersey and tulle (mine totaled $8).  A skirt you already own serves as the pattern piece. Here’s the original version by Sandro

  • Orange cotton jersey (3/4 yard)
  • Black tulle (1 yard)
  • 3/4″ braided elastic

[Use an A-line skirt you already own for the pattern. lay it on top of the fabric. Add an inch to each side. Decide how long you want the skirt and add an extra 2 inches for the waistband and hem]
[The tulle layer is cut wider than the jersey layer to give it a more gathered effect. Using the jersey skirt as a pattern lay it on top of the tulle and add 3 extra inches to each side. The length is suppose to fall about 2 inches below your knee]
[Sew the jersey together at the sides]
[Sew the tulle together at the sides]
[Sew the jersey and tulle layers together at the waistband. Gently stretch the jersey to make it as long as the tulle layer]
[Pin down the waistband 1″. Leave a small gap to feed the elastic through]
[Attach the end of the elastic to a safety pin. Feed it through the waistband]
[Sew the ends of the elastic together- make sure it’s not twisted!]
[Using an iron press down the hem. Go around the skirt and press down the hem again. This double fold method creates a nice, clean hem. Sew down]
