diy reconstruction: sweater into skirt

October 21, 2011

Here’s a fairly simple tutorial for turning a sweater into a skirt. The sweater I used was a cotton/acrylic blend. Try to find a sweater that’s not too thick and that hangs nicely. It will make a big difference with the final result.

  • Old sweater (I prefer to use a man’s because it gives me more fabric to work with)
  • Braided elastic (1/2 wide)
  • Yard stick

[Turn the sweater inside out. Cut down the sides in an A-line shape staying on the inside of the sleeves]
[Sew the sides together. If you don’t have a serger, use the zig-zag stitch to prevent fraying]
[Using a yard stick, mark off how long you’d like the skirt to be. Cut the excess fabric off and finish edges on a serger or use the zig zag stitch]
[Cut a piece of elastic that’s 2 inches smaller than your waist measurement. Sew it around the waistband of the skirt]
[Lastly, hem the skirt by hand]
[Wear & enjoy!]
