Choose Yourself by James Altucher- the Most Important Book I Read in 2016
I’ve never featured a book review on the blog before, but I was so blown away that I had to share his particular one. Also, it seemed fitting with the New Year and the focus on improving ourselves that I should tell you guys about the book that changed my life. Choose Yourself by James Altucher is the most important book I read in 2016 and I’m going to share why you should read it too. I discovered this book via Pinterest from an infographic Altucher created. It was witty, insightful and it just spoke to me. I wanted more, so I immediately purchased his book.
James Altucher opens Choose Yourself by discussing the vanishing middle class in America. Corporations have taken over and workers are expendable.  We’ve been conditioned to believe that we have to wait to be chosen. For jobs. For opportunities. For love.  This waiting around and hoping we’re good enough fosters overwhelming insecurity. Instead of waiting around for someone to hire us, invest in our company, pick us, we must choose ourselves for success. The world has changed and technology has allowed us to bypass the middleman. You don’t need a publisher to sign you, self publish on Amazon. You don’t need an investor for your company, go to Kickstarter. The digital age gives us the freedom to take our ideas directly to our audience.
Altucher advocates having a strong foundation of mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional harmony is the key to unlocking our potential. He achieves this with a routine he calls the “Daily Practice”. Some highlights of the Daily Practice include:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Eat healthy
  • Exercise
  • Write down a list of ideas (10 every day)
  • Think of 10 people you are grateful for
  • Don’t devote any mental energy to people who are causing you grief.
  • No gossiping
  • Read a spiritual text
  • Deep breathing

The idea is to do at least one (preferably more) of these things every single day. These ideas are simple and may sound obvious, but practised every day they really do have a positive impact on your life.
One of the reasons I decided to post this book review is because I know many of you reading this are creative. Maybe you have aspirations of turning your creativity into a business. Choose Yourself  is a must read if you want to start your own business and tap into your creativity.  Altucher says that we are all entrepreneurs and artists. We need to let go of insecurities and build a strong foundation to achieve success.

How has Choose Yourself changed my life?

I read this book less than a month ago and already it’s had a big impact on my life! Every morning I write down 10 ideas. Most of them are business idea that center around this blog and ways to expand. In less than a month I doubled my blog readership and income! Once I started writing down idea, it was like the floodgates opened! I came up with all these new ideas and ways to improve on what I’ve already been doing. I was shocked by the results and I plan to elaborate on this in a future blog post.
Personally, I was able to disengage with an indivIdual who has been putting me down for years. I’ve chosen to surround myself with love and to block out negativity. I’ve let go of anger towards people who have hurt me in the past, because in the end it was only hurting me.
I feel happier, calmer and more optimistic than I ever have before!
If you only do one thing in 2017; Choose Yourself.
