diy braided jersey necklace

November 2, 2012

Anyone who sews knows that you end up with a ton of fabric remnants. Throwing them away seems wasteful, so I’m always trying to think up creative ways to use them. I made this necklace by braiding together strands of jersey and sewing on suede ties as a closure.
Supplies:

  • Jersey fabric (or you can use old t shirts)
  • Suede
  • Leather needle

[Cut 3 strips of fabric 2 inches wide and 14 inches long. Cut another 3 strips of fabric 2 inches wide and 16 inches long]
[On each strip of fabric, sew a straight line down the outer edge creating a tube. Turn inside out]
[Sew a line through the 3 shorter strands connecting them]
[Braid the strands and sew the other end together]
[Repeat the steps with the longer strands and sew the 2 braids together at the ends]
[Cut 6 strips of suede 11 inches long. Braid 3 together, sew the top and knot the end. Repeat]
[Cut out 4 triangles approximately 1 3/4″ wide and 2″ tall. Cut off the points at the top of the triangle]
[Starting at the bottom sew on the front suede piece. When you are finished, sew on the back]
[Sew the front and back together at the side. When you get to the top sew the braided strap in between the two pieces. Sew the final side together. Repeat on the other braided end]

You can tie a knot with the braided ties.
